The Volkerak is known as a water with enormous potential for big perch. But anyone who fishes it regularly also knows it’s anything but an easy water — especially in winter.

During this fishing day we headed out with one clear goal: find perch ahead of an upcoming tournament, and gain insight into the fish’s behaviour at that moment.

Perch fishing on the Volkerak: a strong start, but…

The day started promisingly.

The first perch was soon in the boat:

• about 45 cm
• caught on a finesse approach with a Ned rig
• tested with a light setup and a new lure

That confirmed that:

• fish were present
• finesse could still work

But after that, the picture changed completely.

Tough fishing: where are the Volkerak perch?

After that first fish, things went quiet.

We tried:

• different zones
• shallow and deeper water
• vertical fishing to scan more ground

But every time the same result: zander and pike, no consistent perch action.

That’s typical for the Volkerak:

• plenty of fish present
• but not always active
• and often hard to locate

Perch fishing in winter: why is it so difficult?

Unlike summer, when perch are often predictable and active, that behaviour changes drastically in winter.

Possible explanations:

• fish are spread out more
• fewer active feeding windows
• less reaction to lures
• harder to find with classic patterns

On the Volkerak, add to that:

• big water
• lots of structure
• and often changing conditions

That makes targeted perch fishing on the Volkerak in winter particularly challenging.

Finesse and light tackle

During this session we mainly fished with finesse techniques.

Setup:

• Ned rig
• light rod (finesse oriented)
• subtle presentation

That produced the first fish, but proved not enough to build a pattern.

Still, this remains an important approach — especially when fish are passive and reacting less aggressively.

Not every fishing day gives answers

Despite the limited results, this wasn’t a wasted day.

Quite the opposite.

Sessions like this are often the most valuable:

• you learn where the fish aren’t
• you test techniques
• you gather information for the next sessions

And sometimes that’s exactly what you need heading into a tournament.

The Volkerak remains a challenge

What this day made especially clear:

• the Volkerak isn’t an “easy” water
• certainly not outside the summer season
• and certainly not when you’re specifically targeting perch

The fish are there, but:

• they’re spread out
• they don’t always react
• and often require a different approach

• and sometimes you just have to keep searching
