Or rather, the last Saturday of May. A day that’s always marked with big exclamation points in the calendar for our predator-fishing neighbours to the north. As predator anglers in Belgium we’re less affected by the closed season thanks to our private waters and navigable waterways where predator fishing is still allowed. Still, every year you can see everyone on the various fishing forums already getting excited for that day.

Some fellow Quantum addicts had already fished the opening day in the Netherlands last year, and it was definitely a success with some very nice perch.

All the more reason to do it as a threesome this year.

For water we’d chosen a nice river in the heart of the Netherlands. There wasn’t much current at the moment, and the weather (30° and full sun) wasn’t ideal for our predator friends either. Still, we were determined to go for it hard!

Having just bought my Quantum Vapor Detector 275, I already had the ideal weapon in hand for this.

We set off early in the morning towards the Netherlands to start at the crack of dawn! The first spots sadly produced no bites, and at some point I started to worry a bit about the rest of the day… But then, after about an hour, that first tap as the Quantum Battle shad was sinking! A nice legal-sized zander was the victim!

That spot went on to produce 1 more legal-sized zander on a Quantum Sappy shad, but then it dried up. The next spots gave us the occasional fish here and there. But at one of the spots, it really went off.
I managed to catch some zander on the Quantum Q-paddler proper baitfish 10 cm.

My fellow Quantum addicts also managed to tempt some nice perch and zander into biting! We swapped lures here and there from time to time to check what they were most in the mood for. It turned out the zander suddenly had a preference for the crayfish imitations. Maybe something Quantum could develop further in the future? We tried the Crazy Fish Nimble in 10 cm. A few rock-hard bites and nice zander were the result!

For the rest of the day we entertained ourselves nicely with the rock-hard bites from zander and the sneaky little takes from the perch. In the evening hours we also managed to tempt a few more fish. Sometimes even on the surface with a skirted jighead.

River fishing is a style of fishing that really suits me, hopefully a follow-up coming soon…..
